Health Information Exchange (HIE): How the MCH Community Can Utilize New Funding & Technology

Overview

The Health Resources and Services Administrations Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is pleased to announce an upcoming DataSpeak program on Health Information Exchange (HIE) and how the MCH community can utilize new funding and technology in this area. With the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinic Health (HITECH) Act, there is a renewed emphasis on electronic information exchange in the public health community. This DataSpeak program is intended to provide participants with information about the resources recently invested in HIE and how agencies can benefit and participate, and to provide state examples of successful HIE strategies.

The first presenter for the program will be Kelly Cronin, MPH, the director of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology in the Department of Health and Human Services. She will review the HITECH Act, with an emphasis on what MCH organizations need to be aware of, and what opportunities this new funding source provides. Debra Bara, MA, who is associate director of programs at the Public Health Informatics Institute will introduce the concept of integrated information systems, including why it should be done, who should be involved, and how it can improve population health. The third speaker will be Ellen Amore, MS, manager of KIDSNET for the Rhode Island Department of Health. She will provide an overview of their states integration initiative, including an example child health profile and a discussion of the benefits and challenges that they have faced in implementing the system.
