Implications of the New Federal Approach to Classifying
Race/Ethnicity

Overview
A common language for the collection and analysis of data on race
and ethnicity is essential to understanding relationships between these
characteristics and health status. In October 1997, the Federal government
adopted new standards
for the classification of Federal data on race and ethnicity; these standards
were used in the 2000 Census and must be adopted nationally by January
1, 2003.
This DataSpeak, featuring National Center for Health Statistics researchers
Jacqueline Wilson Lucas, Dr. Brady Hamilton, and Dr. Elizabeth Arias, will
discuss the new standards and their implications for health data and research,
in particular the coding and analysis of infant birth and death records.
