World:
Understanding the Health of U.S. Youth in Comparison to Youth in Other
Countries

Overview
This DataSpeak program provides an overview of health and well-being among
U.S. adolescents in relation to adolescents from other countries, as highlighted
in a new chartbook developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA) entitled U.S. Teens in Our World: Understanding the Health of U.S.
Youth in Comparison to Youth in Other Countries. The report is based on data
from the international Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) study.
This study, sponsored by HRSA’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau and
the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, seeks to understand
adolescent health and health-related behavior in the context of family, school
and peers to improve programs for youth.
During this DataSpeak program, an official from the Maternal and Child
Health Bureau, who is also the principal investigator for the U.S. component
of the international HBSC study, as well as a representative of the National
Adolescent Health Information Center at the University of California at
San Francisco, summarizes research on health and related behavior in areas
where U.S. youth differ from other countries.
