Perinatal HIV Screening: Efforts to Monitor Trends, Improve Provider Capacity, and Reduce Transmission
Wednesday, April 21, 2004

Overview

This DataSpeak program will provide an overview of Federal and State efforts to conduct HIV screening for all pregnant women. In particular, the program will focus on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) HIV Prevention Initiative, which was launched in April 2003. The Initiative strives to make screening part of the standard battery of tests for pregnant women to further efforts to eliminate perinatal HIV transmission in the United States.

During the program, officials from the CDC’s Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention will discuss available data on perinatal HIV testing and highlight HIV screening rates during pregnancy and at labor and delivery. They will also present information on enhanced perinatal counseling and testing guidelines, issues associated with surveillance data, and rapid testing in labor and delivery. Officials from high and low HIV prevalence states will describe how partnerships created between Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant and State HIV/AIDS offices have enhanced efforts to reach women and their providers. An opportunity to pose questions to presenters will be included.
