Any Cigarette Use Among Students in the Past 30 Days, by Grade: 1975–2006

This line graph shows the percentage of students who smoked cigarettes in the 30 days prior to the survey from 1975–2006 for 12th-graders and 1991–2006 for 8th- and 10th-graders. The percentage of 12th-graders smoking cigarettes decreased steadily from 1975 to around 1991 when the percentage started to increase again. For each grade, the percentage of cigarette smokers increased from 1991 to 1995–96, then decreased substantially between 1996 and 2006. In 2006, 21.6 percent of 12th-graders, 14.5 percent of 10th-graders and 8.7 percent of 8th-graders had smoked in the past month. Percent of students reported in 2006 were:

  • 12th grade: 21.6%
  • 10th grade: 14.5%
  • 8th grade: 8.7%
