Hospital Utilization by Income and Race: 2000

In 2000, children under 18 in families with incomes less than $20,000 averaged slightly more nights in the hospital (including deliveries) than children in higher-income families. Lower- income white children averaged 4.9 nights in the hospital, black children 5.2 nights, and Hispanic children 3.2 nights. Among higher-income children, white children had 4.0 nights in the hospital, black children 5.1 nights, and Hispanics 4.6 nights.
