Infant mortality rates for black children dropped from about 23 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1980 to 14 per thousand in 2000. White infant mortality rates dropped from approximately 11 per thousand in 1980 to 5.7 per thousand in 2000. All races dropped from about 13 per thousand in 1980 to 6.9 per thousand in 2000, according to preliminary data.
