Percentage of Infants Born at Low Birth Weight by Race: 1985-2000

The low birth weight rate for all racial/ethnic groups has stayed stable from 1984 to the late 1990s, when most groups have experienced some increase. The rates in 2000 were 13.0% of black babies, 7.3 % of Asian Americans, 6.4% of Hispanics, 6.5% of whites, and 6.8% of American Indians.
